Following the failed coup in Turkey and the reaction of the government, the EU Commission President has said:
“I believe that Turkey, in its current state, is not in a position to become a member any time soon and not even over a longer period,” - Jean-Claude Juncker
This becomes relevant to the Brexit situation when you remember that the Leave campaign was using Turkey as a stick to scare the electorate by saying that we would have thousands of immigrants arrive from Turkey when they joined the EU. This was despite the fact that Britian, as do all current EU members have the right to veto any new member.
For example, Andrea Leadsom, our current Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Or Penny Mordaunt, our current Employment Minister at the Department of Work and Pensions
Funny that the Leave campaign continually accused the Remain of scaremongering when they pulled stunts like this.
